“Good Screen” vs. Tested & Working LCDs: Understanding the difference

An LCD with a “good screen” is not the same as an LCD that has been tested and is working in accordance with R2.  Buyers of LCD monitor screens may be satisfied with a simple flashlight test to reveal whether the screen has cracks or is a “good screen.”  A flashlight test, however, does not meet the R2 requirement of Provision 6.c.2 for R2/Ready for Resale equipment because it does not confirm that a monitor’s key functions are working.

New Provision 11 Guidance Published

Updated guidance to support the implementation and auditing of Provision 11 (Insurance, Closure Plan, and Financial Responsibility) has been published in the R2 Guidance Document, which can be found in  R2 Document Library section of the SERI website.  This new guidance replaces the prior Provision 11 guidance contained in the September 1, 2014 version of the R2 Guidance Document.  The new content was developed by the R2 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).  Some notable changes and clarifications to th

Rescinding the Co-Location Allowance

The Co-Location Allowance defined in the R2 Code of Practices (section V111.C) has been rescinded.  The intention of this allowance was to clarify how the R2 Standard would apply to an electronics recycler that was sharing a location with another business not engaged in electronics-related activities that fall within the scope of the R2 Standard.  In some cases, however, instead of clarifying, the co-location allowance created confusion.

Avoiding a Lapse in Certification

The best way to avoid a lapse in R2 certification due to an expired certificate is to plan ahead and understand the recertification process.   Copies of new and revised R2 certificates are provided to SERI when they are issued by the certifying bodies.  SERI tracks the expiration dates of the certificates, and companies with expired certificates are automatically removed from the R2 Directory and posted on the Changes in Certification page on the SERI website.

What to do when you don’t agree with an auditor

SERI occasionally receives calls or emails from recyclers who are in the midst of an audit.   They are reaching out to SERI because they’re concerned about a potential non-conformance and are seeking a clarification or decision regarding the issue.   It’s important for recyclers to note that while SERI can provide clarification on R2 requirements, SERI cannot arbitrate issues between the recycler and the auditor. Recyclers should also keep in mind that not every concern expressed by the auditor during the audit rises to the level of a nonconformance.
